Flights to Mombasa land at its airport, the Moi International Airport. However, there are better choices and more frequent flights into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi and with onward connections to Mombasa.
Budget Airlines
Many European airlines fly direct to Mombasa; over the past few years, several of the budget airlines have started direct services. The following is a partial list of the airlines which operate direct flights to Mombasa: –

International Airlines
Many of the major international airlines operate direct flights to Nairobi. Starting fares to Mombasa from Europe are around US$1000. Seats tend to sell out quickly. Although Kenya is a year round destination, the peak season for travel to Kenya is between June-September which is the annual migration of the wildebeest and other animals across the plains of the Masaai Mara.
The major international airlines flying into Kenya include:
• Kenya Airways – it has a vast network of flights to African destinations. Partly owned by Royal Dutch KLM, it offers flights to Kenya from Amsterdam, London, Paris, Dubai, Mumbai, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Guangzhou.
• KLM – has two daily flights from Amsterdam to Nairobi and Mombasa. Amsterdam is also the major hub for flights from North America
• Virgin Atlantic – daily services from Heathrow to Nairobi
• British Airways – a major hub for flights from North America, flies from London to Heathrow
• Swissair – from Zurich to Nairobi several times a week
• Brussels Airlines – from Brussels to Nairobi.
With these airlines, it is easy to catch connections in Nairobi on Air Kenya or on small or local airlines.
From North America
There are no direct flights to Mombasa from North America, not even to Nairobi. North American passengers have to change flights twice, firstly in Amsterdam, London, Milan, Munich or Zurich and then again in Nairobi. Northwest has a good affiliation with KLM and Kenya Airways and its passengers will be able to connect onward to Nairobi.
From Australia, New Zealand and Asia
Passengers from Australia and New Zealand have to make intermediate stops in Asia, the Middle East or South Africa. From these countries, they can either fly directly into Mombasa or undergo another change of planes in Nairobi.
Asian passengers can fly directly to Nairobi on Kenya Airways with onward connections to Mombasa.
Within Kenya, a number of travel agencies offer cheaper and discounted flights from points within Kenya or from Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Visa Rules
International passengers can have visas arranged on arrival for a US$50 fee. However, this might lead to some delays and it is always better to arrange the visa before departing the country of origin.
Visas into Kenya are good for three months and visitors have to produce a return or onward ticket and sufficient funds for the length of stay of at least US$500. Travelers from several African and South American countries need to show they have been inoculated against yellow fever before being able to enter Kenya.
There are many chartered flights to Mombasa and seat availability on those flights is best checked with a travel agent. With some pre-planning, your flight will be hassle free and once you are there, all worries disappear!
