Mombasa Beach Hotel

Mombasa Beach Hotel has twin advantages. It is minutes away from Mombasa’s Old Town but, with huge beautifully landscaped grounds, it is a nice sanctuary as well. It is an older hotel and this shows in the slightly outdated décor. However, it has a lively atmosphere and is more popular with African guests than the other beach hotels. Many of its guests are weekenders from Nairobi. A recent 2006 renovation added a new roof and new conference facilities.

The four-storey hotel is built on shady cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean. Off the white sandy beach is a nearby coral reef which shelters the water from big waves and currents of the open ocean, making for safe swimming and enjoyable snorkeling.

Mombasa Beach is owned by government run Kenya Safari Lodges and Hotels. Its new conference center can accommodate up to 200 people.

Restaurants
Five restaurants offer a range of cuisine from the more Maxim’s Cellar to casual dining at the Cavern Beach Bistro. The latter is set in a cave which opens to the beach and is a disco most nights. There are four bars – Kaskazi Bar, Deck Bar, Pool bar, Sports Centre Bar – and 24/7 food service.

Local performances such as Masai dancing begin at 9pm most nights.

Things to Enjoy
The usual water sports such as sailing, snorkeling and windsurfing, scuba diving and glass bottom boating are available here as well as basketball and badminton courts and a “crazy golf” course.

What’s Cool
Its proximity to Mombasa is good for those who want to spend a lot of time in the city. Spectacular sea views from all rooms.
