Nyali Beach Hotel
The first resort built in Kenya, Nyali Beach Hotel is drenched in colonial charm. The three-storey hotel has whitewashed walls, tiled and dark wooden floors, ceiling fans, wicker furniture and potted plants. It is in a beautiful spot on Nyali Beach just north of Mombasa. Set on 20 acres of colorful and shady tropical gardens, it sits on a beautiful palm-fringed white beach which is clean and free of seaweed.
All rooms have double beds with sea views, ensuite bathrooms with bath and showers, balcony and small sitting area. The more luxurious Palm Wing rooms are closer to the beach and have dark wooden floors. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, satellite TV, mini-bars, telephone and 24 hour service.

Restaurants
There are five restaurants at Nyali Beach. Bistro Mchana on the ground floor has a menu for kids. There is a pizza place for pasta, pizza and ice-cream near the pool, L’Orangerie serves breakfast and dinner. There is also the thatched Parrots Terrace and the Mvita Grill, the nicest restaurant on the premises.
Guests can start the day with a champagne breakfast, lunch on pizza, have an afternoon pick-me-up of pancakes at tea and dine to the sound of waves at the Mvita grill. It also serves the highly recommended Nyali fish and chips.
There are 5 bars and the most highly recommended is the Harry’s Pub which has dark wooden paneling, African artifacts and the ambience of an old English pub. The Fountain Lounge has an airy feel with white tiles, bright white wicker furniture and the Lanes bar, close to the beach and ocean, is perfect for sundowners.
Swimming pool
There are two large pools, one of which has a beautifully tiled jacuzzi. There is a kid’s pool. Sunbeds, umbrellas and pool towels are available free of charge.
Entertainment
A resident jazz trio provides dinner entertainment at the Mvita Grill. There is a disco and live DJs spinning music in the Noon’s night club and a casino on the grounds at the Nyali Beach Mombasa.
Things to Enjoy
Tennis, squash, table tennis, aerobics, snorkeling, scuba-diving, deep sea fishing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, glass-bottom boating and catamaran sailing. The hotel can arrange golf at the nearby Nyali Golf and Country Club. Nature trail hikes and visits to a nearby crocodile farm can be arranged.
What’s Cool
The colonial air and a beautiful white beach add charm to the hotel. It is more atmospheric than a tourist hotel and at least half of its guests are Kenyan.
What’s Not
Nyali Beach Hotel has been in receivership since 2003 and there has not been a lot of new investment into the hotel. Some guests feel that a face-lift is needed. Monkeys on the grounds can sometimes surprise guests sitting on the balconies.
